The exhibition shows Jean-Paul Gauliter’s designs – from the first ever shown to the latest, but it also inclued special projects, choosed by the designer himself, that he found inspiring and crucial for his style. The exhibit in the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts is the begining of an international tournée – it will be exp[osed in Dallas, San Francsico, Madrid and Rotterdam.
Jean-Paul Gaultier was born in 1953 in Arcueil near Paris. As a teenager he used to design and sketch entire collections, divided into seasons. He was inspired by everything, but especially by the pop culture, for example by the french television programme Dim, Dam, Dom. The designer himself admits, that the women, who caught his attention, were always a bit weird and outstanding form the mainstream. In the 1970s, he studied the haute couture, basing on work of such designers as Pierre Cardin and Jean Patou. His first prêt-à-porter collection for women was presented in 1976, and for men 1983. Since the year 2003 the house of Jean-Paul Gaultier also designs haute couture collections.
